Find Ease With Your Twins And Multiples Experience Through Pregnancy, Birth and Parenting

Shopping With Twins

Posted by angela at 2nd April, 2009

At first shopping with your twins may be a nightmare but don’t be afraid you can do it.  You just need to be choosy about where you go to ensure your trip is as stress free as possible.

You will be constantly stopped by other shoppers admiring your beautiful twin babies and you will be faced with all the normal questions.  This is all well and good and you don’t wish to be rude to these kind people but when the clock is ticking between feeding times you really don’t have time to chat the breeze.

On the other hand, if you are suffering from cabin fever or lack of adult conversation then do load your twins into their buggy and get out for an hour or so and lap up all the free attention you and your twins will command.  It will soon cheer you up!

Before you have your twins, research the shops that actually have double trolleys.  The large supermarkets provide trolleys for two babies but often they are not conveniently placed or they are few and far between.  Once your twins grow out of the baby double trolleys you will need to use a supermarket that has double trolleys for two toddlers.

We have discovered that our local Tesco Extra Store only has a few double toddler trolleys and they are invariably stuck in the middle of a long line of stacked up trolleys and impossible to reach.  However, all the trolleys at our local Morrisons Supermarket Store are double trolleys thus making the shopping experience possible with the twins.

It’s not just grocery shopping either; you will be surprised at the lack of double trolley facilities in stores such as Toys R Us and even Ikea.  To be fair to Toys R Us, they do have the odd double trolley but Ikea do not even have one.  Apparently, this is due to health and safety issues when using their escalator.

Oh yes, and if you think you are stopping for a quick coffee or lunch make sure you find somewhere that has plenty of highchairs.  You will be surprised at the amount of the larger named coffee stops that struggle to provide two highchairs.

You will do better shopping in a shopping mall or shopping centre.  Most of the shops there will have large automatic doors enabling you to negotiate these shops with your large double buggy!  Smaller local high street shops are often not wide enough for entrance with your side by side transport.

You may be exhausted with the lifting and shifting necessary to even participate in a shopping trip with the twins.  It does take double the time and energy from house to car to buggy or trolley back to car to home – you get the picture.  So if you can make it easier for yourself buy purchasing either a twin travel system for them as babies or even car seats that have the Isofix fittings it will save you an awful lot of time and effort.

If like me, who has never experienced life with a singleton or had the pleasure of one of those gorgeous little travel systems you may find yourself gazing at mums walking along the street happily pushing that lightweight compact little buggy with baby all snug and comfy or wishing you could nip out quickly to the post office or bank whilst scooping your baby up in your arms and plonking them down on the counter still having one free hand to do your banking.  Its not going to happen, get used to it!

As always with twins, two pairs of hands is better than one so if you can get a friend to shop with you then take them along!
