Dads of Twins

Most of the articles on the web seem to be written by mothers of twins and many are directed at mothers of twins; this is for all the Dads of Twins.

We shouldn’t forget the importance of being a Dad or the fact that most fathers of twins are likely to take a much more active role in the practical sides of raising twins because they are very much needed.

If you are the type who believe it’s the woman’s role to take care of the baby you can forget it.  As a father of twins you will definitely need to be hands on and you need to get used to helping out.  You also need to understand that there will be very little time to do anything other than care for your babies for the first year.  Even before you leave the house in the morning for work you are likely to have helped out with the babies and then again when you walk through the door in the evening.

I asked my husband to answer a couple of questions relating to our twins.   Our first set of twins are fraternal girl and boy and our second set are identical twin girls.

Twin Pregnancy

How did you feel when you realised you were going to have twins?

“Although I was pleased I was very concerned about how I was going to financially manage the whole process of having two more babies on the scene considering one person in the family actually has to work.  You have to consider the whole cost of having twins which is something you don’t really discover until you have them.”

How would you summarise the whole twin pregnancy experience from your perspective?

“It’s a big commitment particularly with the pre-natal screening and additional planning and preparation needed before the babies’ arrival.

Newborn Twins – The First Year

From your point of view what was it like raising the twins during the first year?

“It’s very much a hands on process where I had to fulfil the role of a surrogate mother.  It’s very tiring and completely on the go, non stop, 24 hours a day 7 days a week. No sleep, no rest.

Are there any particular memories that will stick with you forever?

Toddler Twins

How would you summarise life with “Toddler Twins”?

Hectic and demanding but it’s also fun.  If you could simply take them out all day long then it would be lots and lots of fun.

What would you say is the hardest part of managing them?

Moving about with them, travelling with them as an individual particularly if you are walking with them.  Even to this day I have a twin carrying device in my mind but have never had the time to action the idea.
