My Fraternal Twin Pregnancy Part One
When I realised I was pregnant it didn’t enter my head that I would be carrying twins. I had no idea whatsoever that I was pregnant with twins. My doctor gave me the news during the ultrasound examination at 7 weeks and I was well and truly surprised to find that I was pregnant with Fraternal Twins.
I was already suffering from extreme nausea and feelings of exhaustion. Although I suffered from nausea (otherwise known as morning sickness) I was never physically sick. It stopped there and for that I am enormously grateful! However, the nausea itself was relentless and lasted all day and was sometimes worse during the night. Sometimes I couldn’t face the kitchen and I had complete loss of appetite.
Soon enough the antenatal care was in place which was completely hospital based. I had a dating scan at 12 weeks. Both my blood and urine were checked and it was decided that fortnightly appointments were necessary. The Anomaly scan took place at 20 weeks. It was either at this scan or the next one two weeks later where the sex of the twins was disclosed! A boy and a girl – perfect!
As I approached the second trimester I started to feel much better. The nausea had eased and I felt a little more energised. I continued to commute on a train to work for a full day in the office. Granted I was taking things slowly and I allowed more time for travelling. I kept up the calorie intake and the fluids and this seemed to carry me through. I thoroughly enjoyed eating during this stage. Not that I ever had to worry about my weight prior to being pregnant but I really took comfort from the fact that I needed the extra calorie intake for my babies.
I really didn’t show until I was 5 months pregnant and I was looking and feeling great. My bump was really nice and tidy. I wasn’t wearing maternity clothes; I just went up a couple of dress sizes. Fantastic! I had no idea at this point just how much I would expand.
