Bottle Feeding Twins

First and foremost, if you have decided to bottle feed your twins out of choice or necessity do not feel guilty about it.  I have two sets of twins and have bottled fed them both; first set through choice and second set out of necessity.  I have bonded with all of my children and they are all healthy children.

Bottle Feeding Twins can be quite stressful largely due to having two hungry babies crying for their milk and you only have one pair hands. Even if they aren’t crying for their milk there is always the underlying stress that they will be soon.

You see many a mother carrying their baby to keep them comforted whilst preparing a feed but carrying two babies and preparing the feed doesn’t happen in a twin household. Unless you have some help at feeding time often your babies will be screaming in their cribs!

If you decide to take the Bottle Feeding Route you will need to have a good supply of bottles and baby milk plus a good sterilizing system. If an average newborn baby feeds as per the “text book”, every 4 hours, you can assume you need to make 6 feeds per day. Multiply this by two and you have 12 feeds per day.  You will find that your steriliser will be permanently on.

The recommendation is that each bottle should be made fresh for each feed although I this really isn’t practical in a twin household.  It is often necessary to make batches instead.

It’s also recommended that you do not use a microwave to heat bottles.  Once again, in a busy twin household a microwave proves an invaluable time saver and with responsible extra care using the microwave to warm the bottles it’s often the best practical solution.
