Travel With Twins
Ok, so travel with twins is not just about wondering how to manage them on an aeroplane or taking them on holiday it’s about every aspect of travel with twins from taking them shopping in their pushchair, driving them in the car, a trip on a bus or walking them both to the park.
One of the main difficulties is getting out and about with twins easily. Firstly you can’t carry your babies in your arms for very long. Secondly, when using your wheels you are faced with a heavier, wider or longer load to push that often fills your boot space to capacity. Everything takes longer to do. Practically, it can be so tiresome that often you feel like staying home! It doesn’t really get easier until they are much older.
You will see mothers with “one” baby scooping them up out of their car seat in to the post office, bank or shop. All of these things you will not be able to do with your twins without using your buggy. If you carry both babies you will have no arms left for doing anything else. Try carrying two baby car seats at once – you will do yourself an injury.
Your weekly grocery shop will be an outing in itself. It is achievable as long as you find a supermarket that has twin trolley’s readily available. You need to prepare yourself for plenty of interruptions in each aisle. Twins are a talking point and your babies will be admired and you will be faced with the same questions time and time again. You will also know that you have a limited time to do your shop before one or both decides its time to scream for feeding and you may find yourself having to be firm with those who want to wish you well! A good solution is order your groceries online and have them delivered.
As the twins get older, the buggy gets heavier. When they begin to walk and want to practice you need to allow extra time to get anywhere. You will be juggling a double buggy plus two toddlers on reins if you are sensible. Twins on reins are good fun. It’s like walking two puppies that wander off into different directions and split you in two and tangle you up in their lead.
You will spend more time on the practicalities of being out with twins. It can be bad enough try to coax one child to sit in their car seat or buggy but just has you have conquered one you still have the other one to go.
Even when your twins are 3 or 4 you still need a firm grip on their hand when out and about particularly if you live in a busy town or city. Add other siblings to the equation and your bag then it really can be quite a feat.
My personal Twins Tips on How to Manage Twins When Out and About
First up, ensure you purchase a suitable twin pushchair or travel system. I would really spend time considering what you will need before you buy. It is worth spending as much as you can on this baby item as it really can help when you need to get out with your twins. There really wasn’t a great selection of innovative twin buggies available when my first set of twins were born but that had all changed 5 years later when my second set of twins arrived much to my relief. We opted for a Jane Twin Two which allows for different seating arrangements including interchangeable and detachable car seats all operated from the one chassis. I highly recommend the Jane Twin Two for ease and there are other choices now based around the same idea from other brands.
As your twins get bigger you may end up swapping your travel system for a regular side by side (which we did) but rest assured you will have massively benefited from the use you have had from the travel system during the first year with twins. Plus, you can always sell on a good twin travel system.
Secondly, buy a changing bag that is large enough to carry everything you need but one that can be easily carried either across the body or on the back. The last thing you want is a shoulder bag that keeps slipping down your body. There are some fabulous designs available now but I must stick my neck out here and say that a good ruck sack is often the best choice and I know that it would suit Dads of Twins the most too.
