Twins Sleeping
What does twins sleeping really mean? It means, sshhhh don’t wake us! Let mum or dad or both have time for a shower or even time for a quick nap or possibly something to eat. You think I’m joking but I’m not; twins are non-stop in the early days.
What it also means is lack of sleep for twin parents at least in the first few months and therefore how can I get my twins to sleep so I can get more sleep and therefore how should twins sleep, together or separately.
So to cover the sleep deprivation part; yes lack of sleep in the beginning is one of the biggest complaints from twin parents. Newborn twins have a relentless feeding schedule which means during the night there is much disruption. Even if your twins are by some stroke of luck on a 3 hourly feeding schedule, the time it takes to feed two babies, change two babies and settle two babies really eats into the hours and does mean that twin parents are often lucky to grab 40 minutes sleep between feeding sessions.
When the twins are older and the feeding sessions have slowed down twin parents may still find themselves up and down for much of the night trying to settle 1 or 2 babies. This leads us on to how should twins sleep.
Twins sleeping arrangements are really decided by your twins and your family home set up. It may be that they prefer to co-sleep but then again they may disturb one another. Much of the sleeping arrangements need to be made after your twins have arrived home and after you have trialled different solutions.
As a Twin Mum twice over I can truly say I know how exhausting it can be and I know how important it is for everyone to get as much rest as possible during those first few months. It’s important that your twins get as much rest as well as parents getting enough to cope.
